Draftkings Sportsbook Nevada

All over the world, thanks to its land-based casinos, Nevada is well-known as the most popular gambling oasis. However, even if Nevada online sports betting is legal, it’s only restricted to mobile applications.

For decades, Nevada sports betting was the only form of legal wagering in the country. Following the 1992 passage of PASPA legislation, Nevada sportsbooks had an effective monopoly in US sports gambling.

DraftKings was the first online sportsbook app to launch outside of Nevada. DraftKings Sportsbook went live in New Jersey in August 2018, less than three months after the Supreme Court ruled PASPA to be invalid.

With PASPA now struck down, Nevada betting sites are eyeing untapped new markets in the nation. Decades of experience give NV sports betting sites a sizable advantage over would-be competitors. Many of the best-known gambling brands on Earth are based in the state.

Sports betting in Nevada has been fully legal since 1949, and it is regulated by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. All NV sports betting sites need to be licensed and registered with the NGCB. The board enforces a strict oversight of all Nevada sportsbooks. DraftKings Sportsbook in Nevada? If persistent rumors of DraftKings Sportsbook getting into the Nevada sports betting market prove true, the company appears stocked with talent to do it. DraftKings Sportsbook now has hired three stalwarts of the local industry, two of them focused solely on the retail side of the business.

How to place a Sports Bet in Nevada

Betting in Nevada is a relatively straightforward process. Generally speaking, players have two options to wager in the state. First, you can visit physical Nevada sportsbooks to make your wagers. If you happen to be in Vegas, visiting local bookmakers is a memorable experience.

When you need to gamble on the go, though, Nevada sports betting apps are the best solution. They offer a simple, legal, and reliable way to place your wagers from anywhere in the state. NV sports betting fans in Henderson, Reno, Carson City and more can use the apps freely.

Next up, we’ll briefly review the legal history and current status of Nevada sports betting.

Nevada Betting Laws

The legal history of betting in Nevada is long and storied. In the 19th century, gambling was legal in the state. That changed in 1909, when legislature passed an anti-gambling law. At the time, Nevada sportsbooks were the only legal bookies in the nation.

By 1931, the Great Depression was wreaking havoc on state budgets all over the United States. In a desperate bid to increase revenue, the state backtracked on the 1909 law, legalizing gambling once more. Nevada sports betting would become legal in 1949.

For several decades, the state was the only safe haven for gamblers in the US. This largely drove the development of Las Vegas in the 60s. In 1977, New Jersey legalized gambling in Atlantic City, finally creating some competition.

With the passage of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, future sports betting legalization was barred. NV and NJ sports betting legislation, decades older than the act, remained unaffected. This gave NV and NJ a monopoly of sorts on sports betting, for a while.

As time went by, more states warmed up to the idea of gambling. Parimutuel (horse) wagering was legalized in a number of states over the years. Eventually, PASPA was struck down, and the sports betting industry thrived. Nevada sports betting apps started crossing over into newly-legal markets.

Step-by-step process for Nevada online sports betting

Nevada online sports betting has changed the face of gambling in the state. Conveniently available wherever you are in NV, online apps let you take your bookie on the go. However, initial setup and registration can be somewhat vexing for new players.

Follow the steps below to start your Nevada online sports betting experience on the right foot:

Sportsbook
  • Select an operator from the list of Nevada betting sites.
  • Visit the official website on your mobile device.
  • Complete the mobile sign-up process. You’ll have to provide your personal information, including part of your SSN.
  • Visit one of the physical Nevada sportsbooks affiliated with your chosen operator.
  • Activate your mobile account. You can use a kiosk or ask a staff member for help.
  • Download the relevant Nevada sports betting apps. If you’re interested in both casino and sports betting, you may need to download more than one app.
  • At this point, you may need to register your mobile app at the physical sportsbook.
  • Log into your account.
  • Make a deposit to fund your account. You can add funds at kiosks or through prepaid cards.
  • Explore the sports betting markets available.
  • Pick a line and tap on it. Enter your stake, and place your bet!

Not all Nevada betting sites follow the same procedure, so your mileage may vary. A few may skip one or two of these steps, or change the order around a bit. They should hold more or less true across the vast majority of Nevada sports betting apps, though.

Nevada Online Sports Betting: Events and Betting Markets

There’s a ton of Nevada sports betting action out there. The state is home to many popular sporting events. In addition to that, NV sports betting markets are among the richest and most diverse in the nation.

Up next, we’ll review some of the most popular events in Nevada sports betting.

Popular Nevada Events

  • Wrangler National Finals Rodeo: This event is a yearly showcase for the top 15 money-winners in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. It's held in the University of Nevada Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center.
  • NCAA Las Vegas Bowl: The Las Vegas Bowl is a NCAA-sanctioned Division I college football bowl game. It has ties to the Pac-12, SEC, and Big Ten conferences.
  • Pennzoil 400: The Pennzoil 400 (sponsored by Jiffy Lube) is the first of Nevada’s NASCAR Cup Series races. It’s been held every year since 1998. Interestingly, it’s the only race where winners don’t get trophies, but championship belts instead.
  • South Point 400: The South Point 400 is a NASCAR Cup Series. It’s held every year in Nevada, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It’s the fourth race in the Cup Series playoffs season, and a major event for betting in Nevada.
  • UFC Apex: The Ultimate Fighting Championship has deep ties to Las Vegas. UFC Apex isn’t a competition per se, but rather, the site of countless UFC events, tournaments, and fight nights. There are live events at UFC Apex every other week, on average.

Common Types of Bets

When betting in Nevada, there are many different kinds of wagers you can place. Nevada betting sites offer a huge selection of betting markets for you to explore. Below, we’ll explain some of the most popular Nevada sports betting markets.

  • Win bets: A win bet, also known as a moneyline bet, is the simplest type of wager there is. You pick a team or participant and back them to win.
  • Over/Under Bets: Also known as “totals”. In this wager, players select whether a score will be above or below a certain number. The scores can be final or partial, total or team-specific.
  • Point Spreads: Very popular types of wager in Nevada online sports betting. First, bookies pick a “spread,” a positive or negative score difference between the two teams. Favored teams get positive spreads, while underdogs get negative spreads. Players bet on whether a team will beat the spread.
  • Handicap Bets: A handicap bet is very similar to a point spread wager. The main difference is that spreads are specifically calculated to balance selections with a perceived disparity in ability. Handicaps instead provide additional options for players, with different odds & payouts.
  • Outright Bets: Outright markets, also known as futures betting, allow you to wager on the winner of major events. For example, you can bet on the winner of the next Super Bowl or World Series.
  • Prop Bets: Proposition bets, also known as 'props' or 'specials', cover almost anything unrelated to the final outcome of the game. Will a certain player score a goal? Which team will win the coin toss? Who will be winning at halftime? These are the types of markets that prop bets cover.
  • Parlays: A parlay lets you combine selections across different events into a single wager. They offer exposure to higher odds, but all your selections need to win.

Daily Fantasy Sports in Nevada

Daily fantasy sports have taken the US by storm in recent years. Existing in a gray area between chance and skill, DFS managed to penetrate many markets where sports gambling was illegal. Ironically, though, NV sports betting legislation has been an issue for DFS sites.

State legislators have found daily fantasy sports to fit NV’s definition of gambling. Therefore, operators in the space would need a costly gambling license, and all the paperwork and oversight it entails. Both FanDuel and DraftKings have so far shied away from this process.

In 2020, DraftKings opened up its first office in the state. The company still doesn’t provide its services to Nevada-based customers, though. It’s a call center operation, processing a range of IT incidents, customer experience issues, and fraud claims.

At the moment, both companies are lobbying the state to pass new Nevada sports betting laws specific to DFS. This would include a special DFS license that’s separate from general NV sports betting licenses. FanDuel and DraftKings’ lobbying efforts are yet to bear any fruits.

In what states is DraftKings Sportsbook legal?

Few sportsbook operators have been more proactive about launching their products in new sports betting states than DraftKings. Wherever a sports betting launch has occurred, DraftKings has seemed to be there. So, if you want to play on DraftKings Sportsbook, options are probably closer than you think they are.

Online

DraftKings was the first online sportsbook app to launch outside of Nevada. DraftKings Sportsbook went live in New Jersey in August 2018, less than three months after the Supreme Court ruled PASPA to be invalid. Since then, the company has been at the forefront of launches in no fewer than seven other states. Here’s where you can find the DraftKings Sportsbook app:

DraftKings New Jersey

DraftKings New Jersey launched in August 2018 as the first online sportsbook app to exist outside of Nevada. In order to do so, the company partnered with the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City. You can deposit into your account through the casino cage at Resorts AC, if you wish. However, betting on colleges located in New Jersey or collegiate events that take place in the state is not permitted.

DraftKings Pennsylvania

DraftKings Pennsylvania entered service in the Keystone State in October 2019. The launch came as the result of DraftKings’ partnership with the Meadows Casino. At this time, it is not possible for players to deposit into their DraftKings accounts at the Meadows cage. According to state law, the only events that you will be unable to bet in Pennsylvania are esports and non-sporting events like elections and awards shows.

DraftKings Illinois

DraftKings Illinois became a reality in August 2020. The company has partnered with the Casino Queen riverboat in East St. Louis. Casino Queen is also rebranding itself as the DraftKings at Casino Queen to emphasize the partnership. You cannot make a deposit into your account through the Casino Queen cage just yet, but with the rebrand, it may become possible in the future. Illinois law is one of the more restrictive in the nation, and there are several prohibitions that you must abide in the Land of Lincoln. For one thing, remote registration is mostly not allowed, and is only proceeding because of a temporary stay from Gov. Pritzker. You also cannot bet on in-state college games, minor league games, high school sports, non-sports events, or any individual propositions on colleges.

DraftKings Colorado

DraftKings Colorado first opened its virtual doors in May 2020. The company is operating in Colorado as a result of a deal with Twin River Holdings, which owns the Mardi Gras Casino in Black Hawk. Depositing through the cage at the Mardi Gras, however, is not an option right now. Colorado does allow you to bet on almost any type of sporting event aside from high school sports. The only exception is on prop betting for college sports – those aren’t allowed. You can bet on esports, though, so long as they are sanctioned by a reputable governing body.

DraftKings Indiana

DraftKings Indiana entered the market in October 2019. The debut was made possible through DraftKings’ partnership with the Ameristar East Chicago. You cannot deposit with cash at the Ameristar cage, unfortunately. Indiana does not allow you to bet on esports or high school games, and the gaming commission maintains strict control over live betting. However, everything else is on the table in the Hoosier State.

DraftKings Iowa

Thanks to a deal with the Wild Rose Casinos, DraftKings Iowa came online in February 2020. At this time, you cannot make a deposit at one of the three Wild Rose cages, but that situation could change at some point in the future. Iowa does permit betting on pretty much everything, but you cannot make an in-game wager on an in-state college team. It’s a minor restriction compared to those in other states, but it’s there, nonetheless.

DraftKings West Virginia

West Virginians gained the ability to bet on DraftKings West Virginia in January 2020. As part of its ongoing partnership with Penn National Gaming, DraftKings became one of the mobile sportsbooks operating on the Hollywood Casino Charles Town’s license. You can make a deposit in cash at the Hollywood cage, if you like, or you can use one of the other methods online. Aside from the standard prohibition on high school sports, you can bet on pretty much any event in West Virginia. Esports, in-state college teams, and other commonly-restricted markets are fair game in the Mountain State.

DraftKings New Hampshire

DraftKings New Hampshire managed to get itself going just before the end of 2019. The smaller population and remote location of the state allowed DraftKings to have a virtual monopoly over sports betting in the state. Though it has since opened retail books in two locations in New Hampshire, the company was operating without a partner before then. Nevertheless, you can undoubtedly make cash deposits as either retail location at The Brook in Seabrook or the South Side Tavern in Manchester. New Hampshire’s only restrictions on betting are for high school teams and live bets on in-state college teams. Everything else is fine.

DraftKings Tennessee

Tennessee is one of the more unusual members of the fraternity of sports betting states. The Volunteer State does not have any land-based casinos inside its borders, so Tennessee sports betting occurs entirely online.

Of course, this quirk plays right into DraftKings’ wheelhouse. Online sports betting in Tennessee debuted on November 1, 2020, and DraftKings was one of three companies to receive the first conditional licenses to operate in the state and launch on day one.

DraftKings Michigan

Online sports betting is live in Michigan as of January 22, 2021.

DraftKings, for its part, already has secured a partnership with a Michigan-based casino owner, the Bay Mills Indian Community. Given DraftKings’ history of being on the forefront of launches in other states, it comes as no shock that DraftKings was one of the first online sportsbooks to open for Michigan inhabitants.

DraftKings Virginia

January 24, 2021 saw the arrival of DraftKings online sportsbook in Virginia, just the second operator to launch in-state All regulated sportsbook action in Virginia takes place within mobile apps. Fortunately DraftKings has a world-class native app for both iOS and Android devices.

Next Online Books to Launch

Sitting tight is not really DraftKings’ style. The company has proven itself to be an early adopter wherever sports betting goes, and DraftKings clearly has no intention of standing pat with the states in which it’s active. As more states move to legalize sportsbetting, DraftKings will surely be an active participant. We will update this review as it happens.

Retail

Although online sports betting is the hot ticket item for DraftKings right now (along with every other sportsbook operator), the company is still investing in retail sportsbook expansion, too. DraftKings Sportsbook account creation

The sign-up process for DraftKings is extremely simple. Players can sign up on the app itself or through their desktop. For most of the states, only the basic information and the geolocation are required for online betting apps.

The process is quick, and the geolocation tracker only takes a few seconds to determine the location.

Iowa and Illinois have an in person registration requirement. However, Illinois is waiving this currently. We suggest you register your account soon to save yourself the extra step of visiting the physical DraftKings sportsbook in East St Louis. If you live in Iowa you need to visit one of the Wild Rose Casino & Resort locations in Jefferson, Emmetsburg, and Clinton.

Afterward, though, you can sign in and access the sportsbook online through a desktop or mobile device, as you can in any other state, so long as you are located within the state borders.

Downloading the DraftKings Sportsbook App

The original DraftKings (DFS) is available on the iTunes Store, the Google Play Store, and on the desktop website. However, the DK Sportsbook requires its own account and app.

Here are the ways that the app can be downloaded, and the desktop version can be played.

  • DraftKings Sportsbook for Android:Follow this link and click on “Download for Android.”
  • DraftKings Sportsbook for iPhone and iPad:Follow this link and click on “Download in the App Store.”
  • DraftKings Sportsbook for browsers: No download required. Just create an account via this link.

After downloading, follow the on-screen directions and answer the questions as they are presented. The download process only takes a few seconds and the geolocation is quick. Once the app is downloaded once, it can be accessed like any other app.

The desktop version is easy to use, although there is still a geolocation tracker but afterward, the desktop sportsbook functions fluidly.

Betting on DraftKings Sportsbook

Sports betting has been around for a long time. Horses, cars, competitive games against friends and through professionals have all been the subject of bets. Therefore, to do it justice, digitalized sports betting needs to be as dynamic as it is in real life.

DraftKings has done a good job of replicating the in-depth betting process of physical sports betting. Here are the different ways that a player can bet with DraftKings:

Moneyline

A moneyline is a bet based on who the player thinks will win the game. This is the simplest form of sports betting. It is clean-cut and simple.

The odds in moneyline wagers are attached to the favorite as well as the underdog.

Spreads

Point spreads are chosen when each outcome has a + or a – attached to it. How does it work?

For example, if a game has a ‘line’ of 3.5, one team is favored to win by more than 3.5 points — i.e. they would have to win by four or more for a bettor to win this bet. On the other hand, a bet on the other side would require the team that is +3.5 to win the game outright, tie, or lose by three or fewer points.

There are also different names for Spreads based on the game being played. Here are the different games that have different jargon for spreads:

  • Run Line = Baseball
  • Puck Line = Hockey

Futures

Futures bets are wagers that are based on some future event.

A popular example would be betting on who will win the World Series or the Super Bowl. This is a long-term bet that usually has longer odds than game outcomes. After all, this is the prediction of an entire season.

Futures are available on many sports at DraftKings.

Parlays

A parlay takes two or more single bets and combines them. This is a wager that pays well but has worse odds generally than other straightforward bets. The reason for this is because to win, all the included wagers must win.

The reason players like these bets are that the payoff is usually higher than if each bet was placed individually.

Totals

Draftkings Sportsbook Nevada Entertainment

Totals — or over-under bets — are simple, in that there are only two options. Basically, the bet is whether the actual score in a game will be over or under the player’s chosen number. For example Most times, the Over-Under bet is contingent on the entire game, although you can often bet totals on quarters or halves.

In-play betting

This is also called live betting is either a short-term or long-term bet, placed after a game started.

In-play betting is exciting because it can be done multiple times per game. Bets can consist of who will get the next goal, or who will win based on odds determined by the current score of the game.

This is a thrilling form of betting. It keeps players on the edge of their seats, with multiple moments of excitement throughout the game.

Cashing out of existing bets

It is possible to cash out of existing bets, in some instances. Usually, once a bet is placed and confirmed, there is little that can be done to reverse the bet.

However, there are some times where a player can cash out of existing bets at DraftKings. Often, bets that are multi-faceted will allow players to cash out if they want to keep the amount of money they currently have.

Of course, in this instance, the entire bet would not be returned, but it is possible to recoup a portion of the original bet.

Sports available on DraftKings Sportsbook

There is a plethora of sports that are popular throughout the United States and internationally. DraftKings has more than the four American favorites. Here is a list of the games that can be bet on throughout the app:

  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • MMA
  • Motorsports
  • Rugby
  • Soccer
  • Tennis

DraftKings Casino

If there was any previous doubt, DraftKings is now a full-blown gambling company.

In December, it added blackjack tables to its online/mobile sportsbook offerings. Video poker, roulette and slots are now available on DraftKings Casino, too.

Account funds, status and promotions are shared across DraftKings’ sportsbook and casino offerings.

Areas that are exceptional for DraftKings

DraftKings was the first to offer an NJ sports betting app, so it has been a leader from the beginning of the regulated US online sportsbook scene. What has it gotten right?

Information sharing

DraftKings has a lot to offer players. You can bet on just about any sport, as well as live-betting that will keep fans engaged. Seasoned sports bettors will surely feel right at home on DraftKings.

Yet, what is an even more impressive feat is the amount of information DraftKings provides newcomers. Usually, odds and a basic explanation of how to play the game is given. That is if any information is divulged.

Yet, DraftKings make it possible for players to learn about betting on their platform with in-depth examples, descriptions and videos. This approach is a nod to their customer service and the passion that DraftKings has to the sportsmanship they represent.

Speed

Gambling is best associated with speed. Betting is a speedy, exciting, heart-racing endeavor. Therefore, having a system that can keep up with the speed of such activities is paramount.

DraftKings excels in the expedience that is necessary for such a fast-paced betting platform. Not only are the actions of the app quick, the geolocation for both the desktop and app is speedy. Deciphering location is where things tend to slow down with some betting apps, but not with DraftKings.

Areas of DraftKings that could be improved

DraftKings Sportsbook is a new app and thus, there are bound to be some growing pains associated with it. While there are many ways in which the app excels, there are also a few areas where DraftKings could improve.

VIP Treatment

Fantasy sports fans spend a lot of money and time utilizing the DraftKings apps. Sports fans are one of the most loyal fans out there. Therefore, their patronage should be truly rewarded. The VIP Treatment that rewards fans are a little underwhelming. There is nothing wrong with the app rewarding in-game prizes and bets. However, people must spend a fair amount of money to even come close to achieving the first tier of rewards. Anything of any semblance of significance seems lightly impossible. It would be far more appealing to make the VIP/Loyalty rewards system slightly more attainable.

Depositing money through DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings has made it incredibly easy to deposit money instantly. Here is the list of avenues through which a player can deposit their funds:

  • Credit/Debit card
  • Play+ Prepaid
  • Bank transfer

*DraftKings promise to update the depositing methods soon. However, maintaining the safety of their players is their main priority. Therefore, DraftKings will not update their system until they are sure the present safety and security standards are met.

However, deposits and withdraws can be made directly through the desktop and the app.

Withdrawing through DraftKings Sportsbook

Withdrawing through DraftKings is simple, albeit a little outdated.

  • Check
  • Play+ Prepaid
  • Cash at cage (in states where there is a retail sportsbook)

DraftKings DFS and sportsbook accounts

DraftKings DFS started in 2012 and consistently denied being a part of sports betting. (It was illegal in most states, after all.)

However, after New Jersey legalized sports betting, DraftKings Sportsbook became the first mobile sportsbook available. Even that was only officially launched at the beginning of August 2018.

The original DraftKings DFS platform and the DraftKings Sportsbook are linked for players in New Jersey. DraftKings officials wanted the transition to be quick and easy, so the company integrated DFS and Sportsbook with an update.

However, to download the Sportsbook app, players must go to the website through their mobile browser and follow the prompts. However, it does not take long and the app is extremely stable.

Moving money from DraftKings to DraftKings Sportsbook

Sportsbook and the original DFS site/app sort of share the same wallet. All funds that were available in the DFS wallet — if a player had already used them to enter a DFS contest — were automatically set to be available for use in Sportsbook as of Aug. 1, 2018.

However, any additional funds need to come out of the player’s winnings, not their specifically deposited DFS funds. Currently, the player must run through their original deposit first, so that the winnings could be used in Sportsbook.

Although, Sportsbook funds can be used to enter DFS contests. It is a little confusing but there is no straightforward way to transfer funds from one to the other. This is unfortunate since the same profile is available for each.

Sportsbook funds can be moved to the DFS site and app as well.

Browser betting at DraftKings

The browser-based interface is not much different from the mobile experience.

The major difference is that there are two tabs (DFS/Sportsbook) instead of two apps. This makes it easy to toggle between the two, as one account links both DFS and Sportsbook.
